Work Of The Humane Society Of The United States.
Most people have a perception of the humane society of the united states as being an organization that has many animals which are waiting for people to adopt. HSUS’ work goes beyond supporting the local animal shelters in doing their work. To bring out the complex work the organization carries out using simple words, the organization’s motto is ‘Celebrating Animals, Confronting Cruelty’.
Today in the world, there are a thousand of animal species. The main objective of the HSUS is to protect, save, and rescue these animals. The organization works globally not just in the United States and has been involved in work to save animals found deep in the Ocean. Some of the animals the organization has participated in rescuing have been involved in racing, rodeos, Zoos, circuses, hunting, fashion, aquariums and research. However, these are some of the activities because the list is long.
It is the work of HSUS to work with pet owners in ensuring their safety and security and also providing the support to the other local animal shelters HSUS has been a leading organization in lobbying for laws related to animals both locally and internally. The laws that the organization has been lobbying are meant to ensure that animal cruelty has been eliminated. There are instances when disasters occur, such as the Hurricane Katrina or the Tsunami which hit South East Asia. In such scenarios the HSUS is always ready to travel in the area to help in the rescue mission of the animals. The HSUS has programs that ensures that home owners are educated about the backyard animals such as squirrels.
The history of animal welfare organizations has a long history and started way before HSUS was founded. The Society for the prevention of cruelty of animals is the first known organization know to advocate for animal rights in the U.S. Prior to this organization, there had not been another such organization in the U.S. Subsequently, more organizations came up. Follwing a delegates which was carried out in 1887, the delegates agreed the organizations to come together and form the American Humane Association. In the AHA, there were disagreements among the members and this led to a split with those who left forming the current Humane society of the United States.
HSUS works to ensure that all cruelty against animals has been eliminated in the whole world. Among the first pieces of legislation was the one to fight against mistreatment of animals used for research. Many laws in the U.S have passed. The laws range from those protecting endangered species to those that make it illegal to mistreat research animals inhumanly.
